TMJD (Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction)

Symptoms

TMJ pain is often described as a dull aching pain in the jaw joint and nearby areas, including the ear, which comes and goes. Some people, however, report no pain, but still have problems using their jaws. Other symptoms can include:

- Being unable to open the mouth comfortably
- Clicking, popping or grating sounds in the jaw joint
- Locking of the jaw when attempting to open the mouth
- Headaches
- Neck, shoulder and back pain

Additional symptoms may include: Ringing in the ears, ear pain, decreased hearing.

Causes

Some possible causes or contributing factors are injuries to the jaw area, dental procedures, and clenching or grinding of the teeth.

Treatment

First, the the muscles of the neck are addressed to see if they are the initial cause of TMJ pain and tension. Neck muscles that attach near the jaw can tighten and put strain on the jaw causing pain and an uneven bite. The muscles of the upper back and hip region are assesed because a body that is "off" posturally can effect the whole body how it is aligned causing an imbalance in the jaw and surrounding areas. We will utilize Neuromuscular Therapy and stretching techniques both on the external and internal jaw, neck, back and pelvis to realign and rebalance the bones and musculature that is the direct cause of the imbalances. The improvement in TMJD is many times very dramatic in just one or two sessions. Please call the Aubrey Center for more information on how our therapy can help you.
